National Innovation on Climate Resilience in Agriculture- NICRA

Project In Charge: Dr. Jagdish Grover

Co-Project In Charge: Dr. Rakesh Kumar Singh
Senior Research Fellow: Mrs. Harsimran Kaur, Mr. Dharamjeet Singh
Village Adopted: Pindi Balochan

Objectives of NICRA Project
  • §  To identify major vulnerabilities e.g. water scarcity, recurrent drought, flood, cold wave, heat wave, pest and disease of crops and livestock, fodder scarcity, poor access to improved seeds and inputs and farm machinery.

  • To find alternate crop varieties, in-situ moisture conservation, water harvesting(pond), management of mid season drought, improved drainage, frost management, micro-irrigation, silage as feed using surplus fodder during rainy season, prophylaxis of animals, stress tolerant high yielding animal breeds, cost effective shelters, heat stress management in poultry, agro-advisories etc.

  • To purchase farm machinery for custom hiring in the target village, seed bank, fodder bank, management and utilization of CPRs for drought coping and SHGs and commodity groups for organized production and marketing.

  • To develop capacity building for awareness enhancements and training on climate resilient technologies, risk management and managing relevant institutions.

Future Plans of NICRA Project

  • To select one village in the district for implementation of the project.

  • To analyze the climate characters of the village and collect benchmark information on natural resource & socio-economic status.

  • To demonstrate technology at farmers fields which can bear effect of climate change. Identification of most sustainable practices adopted by the farmers.

  • To finalize climate resilient technology package.
